My Students
It is so easy to just say that "kids will be kids" and excuse the bullying that goes on in schools. "There has always been bullying" and other lame excuses that adults make are the reason that bullying continues to adversely effect thousands of students a year. But we are drawing a line in the sand!
Our students are not average.
Not by a long shot! Not only have they dedicated themselves to a longer school day, a more rigorous curriculum and a longer school year, they have also accepted that they are help to a higher standard of behavior and character than their peers. Instead of folding at this challenge, our students embrace the struggle as they understand that "without struggle, there is no progress" as they climb the mountain to college.
My Project
We make character education happen at our school through and advisory program that gives our students a lot of time with a mentor each week, throughout the whole school year. We tackle many of the toughest challenges that students face academically, and behaviorally. One of the most difficult challenges we face is the problem of bullying. Our society often glorifies bullying and too often, educators downplay bullying in schools. But in our advisory program, we tackle the program head-on! We are already talking through a lot of the issues that students face related to bullying, but with the books Bullying in Schools, I know we will be able to take it to the next level. Each advisory group will be able to engage in an in-depth study of the book and deal through the emotions and issues that arise. Additionally, each student will create an anti-bullying poster that we will decorate the school with, reminding our students everywhere that they go that we are a Bully Free Zone!
With such a great opportunity to spread such an important message, this project provides a unique chance to drastically impact some amazing students.
When students see that the adults in the building are serious about tackling bullying, this is absolutely a problem that can be defeated. It is inspiring to think about the possibilities of a bully free school and what our students could achieve without the stress of harassment and teasing. It would make our path to college a much happier route!
