My students need to take notes in their books, but they can't write in the books! So we need five value packs of Post-it Notes, and eight different colored boxes of Flair pens.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students read an extra four books every year beyond the district requirements. They need lots of practice with reading, but since we use the books every year, they can't take notes inside the books.
My students are English learners, new moms, kids just getting on their feet after juvenile detention, foster kids, and just ordinary 10th graders.
They live in the highest poverty community west of the Mississippi and things like school books, pens, and post-its come out of my pocket, not theirs. I know my students need literacy to understand the world around them. I know their education will enrich their lives.
My Project
My students need to take notes in their books, but they can't write in the books! So we need five Value packs of Post-it Notes, and eight boxes of different colored Flair pens. Every student needs a chance to take notes in the books we read every year. They can talk back to the text, translate words, and mark key passages. In wealthy schools, students buy the books they need so they can mark up the pages, like a college student. My students will mark up the pages--with post-it notes! That way, we can reuse the books next year and beyond. Each student will become a stronger reader and thinker and then we will have a better school and society. What a beautiful idea.
This seemingly simple project is the kind teachers need most.
It is the $200 Target run that most of us make on the average weekend for supplies for our kids. It's the boxes that trickle to our homes from Amazon.com. This is one way that we can make literacy sustainable in our school--with your help. Every kid can enjoy reading in the 2015-16 school year.
