Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine students working quietly while some educational music plays softly in the background. The music helps stimulate young minds and also helps students with learning disabilities concentrate better. My class is often a place of loud chaos, a mix of languages, and lots of energetic learning. But occasionally, this peace and quiet that comes from music is so nice. I teach in a low income school district, so my kids' exposure to educational and classical music is often limited. Music that helps them learn is not something my bilingual students experience on a regular basis. I attended a workshop on using stations and rotations in the classroom. I love using centers for my kids to work independently and collaboratively. However, the biggest challenge we face is signaling when it is time to switch activities. Often, the noise of busy children working is louder than I expect and my voice can't handle the strain of trying to call them back to attention. On the other hand, there are times when my class is working quietly...a little too quietly. So one child starts to giggle, then another, and soon the class is off task and distracted. Music is the solution to both these problems. I can use music as a signal for time to transition, using songs that they can sing along with as they clean and change tasks. This will help manage the noise as they listen to, and eventually sing along with, these songs. During quiet work time, I can play soft classical music in the background to encourage their thought processes. Students with dyslexia will especially benefit, since the background noise helps them focus better! I want to get my class an iPod and docking station, so I can project music into the room. I need speakers with a remote control so I can control the music level from around the room as I work with kids. A system with an alarm will allow me to set a certain time for the kids to change stations and have the music go off automatically, keeping all of us on task and on time! Additionally, I want to get some CDs with good educational songs the kids can learn and sing to as they rotate stations. School House Rock is a personal favorite and beloved memory from my school years and I want my kids to be able to learn from the ingenious and catchy songs. "Conjunction junction, what's your function..." Your generous donation will help my students focus on their work during quiet time as well as help me guide them during rotations in a peaceful, fun manner. Additionally, you'll be helping my kids learn songs that can help them learn grammar, math, social students and much more!
