Help me give my students magnetic boards, numbers and letters, plus other math manipulatives to help build their basic letter and number comprehension.
This is an extremely unique school year. My first grade students have never experienced a normal school year, and this year will not be normal either. Due to Covid 19, most of these children were not able to attend a preschool or Head Start program. Some of my students don't recognize letter and numbers. This is critical background knowledge for first grade students and we have some catching up to do!
More than half of my students are living in low-income households, and the same percentage are first-generation United State citizens.
They have watched how hard their parents work to provide them with a safe, comfortable home in a country that values freedom and imagination. As incredible as their young imaginations may be, sometimes hands-on materials and supplies are just as important as their minds for success in school.
My Project
Since many of my students were not able to attend preschool due to Covid closures, they need to build their basic numeracy and literacy skills. Using hands-on materials is typically the most effective method to use to engage primary students. Magnetic letters and numbers manipulated on magnetic boards will help with this challenge.
If we can make-up for the basic concepts of preschool denied by Covid, we can bridge the gap that would otherwise follow these students for the next several years.
