This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my first year teaching in a new district. It is a title 1 school located in Hartford, Connecticut. My students are incredibly curious, creative, and motivated to learn and grown their brains. These little kiddos come from very humble beginnings. More than three quarters of my kiddos come from low-income households. Each of them have big dreams of their own.

As we kick off the start of the school year, I am finding that my students are in desperate need of hands-on materials to help enforce key concepts in math reading and science.

Items such as base ten blocks, linking cubes, fraction bars, measuring cups, magnifying lenses, magnets, mini flashlights, and sentence strips to name a few items. Also I am desperate to grow my classroom library as I only have a few books.

My Project

Though no fault of their own, the majority of my students are 1 to 2 grade levels below where they need to be. The urgency to catch them up is what is driving this project. We all know that people learn best by doing.

We are 3 weeks in to the school year and I do not have manipulative to help my students learn key concepts like addition and subtraction.

In science, we are looking at matter and I would love for them to examine things more closely to help them make observations. Allowing students to use these materials will help advance their learning. I can use these materials during whole group, independent practice, or in centers. Sentence strips are great for writing out big ideas, goals, or project/themes for students to investigate further. With your help, the possibilities are endless!
