My students need a bean bag board, a set of bean bag letters, bean bag numbers, counting cakes, other math manipulatives and storage bins to hold our new materials.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The biggest challenge I have when working with my students is that the materials we have are old, missing pieces or we just don't have it in our classroom at all. Not having complete sets of manipulatives makes it challenging for both myself and my students.
The enrollment at our school is range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences, challenges and abilities.
However, once through the doors, there is a real sense of community, mutual respect and friendship. Our school is located in a predominantly low-income neighborhood, which means that many of our students may not have access to many of the materials outside the classroom as students in surrounding communities. Unfortunately, our school funding leaves little room for new materials, and many of our classrooms are missing some of the essentials materials needed in a Pre-K classroom. Many of the materials in my classroom were donated and as the years have passed these materials have fallen apart and now are missing pieces or have disappeared leaving very few manipulatives to work with.
My Project
My students will use these resources to participate in small group center activities, both independently and cooperatively with and without the teacher. Students will learn to work cooperatively to solve problems with bean bag letters and numbers, count bears using one to one correspondence, sort and number identification. Working cooperatively giving students an opportunity to communicate verbally and it is also a great skill to have throughout their schooling. Also, the storage bins will help us keep all our new materials together and in one place.
When teaching young children it is critical that students have hands on experiences.
These experiences help young children understand what is going on. This enables them to manipulate materials and try to figure it out for themselves. Also, I teach special education students and having these hands on experiences help them better understand exactly what we are talking about. We desperately need new materials to continue our mission of educating young children to reach for the stars!
