My Students

"Yes, we can!" Some of my students are discovering the joy of writing. Students write, "We had a good time at the mall, and we played a good game of basketball." Utilizing a thesaurus students will be able to find several synonyms to replace "good" such as stupendous, exceptional, and splendid.

I service approximately 200 students (K-8) in an urban public school in Illinois.

Most of the students are eager to learn and enjoy challenging and engaging assignments as a result the math and reading scores improved last school year. The school is situated in a high poverty, gang infested neighborhood. Approximately 95 percent of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Fifteen percent of our students are homeless and several families reside in a shelter a few blocks from the school. We promote a culture of caring by providing breakfast and lunch for our students. Those staying for afterschool programs receive a snack. Most staff members spend their own money on school supplies to ensure that our students are equipped for learning. The school building itself is very old, hard to heat in the winter and stifling during the summer months. Most students are resilient and do their best regardless.

My Project

The students have been working on persuasive essays. During the editing stage I would like for them to use the thesaurus to replace mundane words to enrich their writing. Next, they would have a peer edit their paper. Then, revise using as many synonyms from the thesaurus as they could. Finally, they would type their paper to be published. The new vocabulary gleaned from the thesaurus would also improve their reading comprehension. The students would receive hands on experience on utilizing the thesaurus to make their writing better.

The thesauruses would impact student learning by increasing their vocabulary to enhance both writing and reading comprehension.

The ability to use a thesaurus to improve writing would benefit them in high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate courses. This would lead to higher wages in the job market. A diploma from college, and higher wages would be their way out of the poverty stricken area that they now reside.
