This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have a kiln, a pottery wheel, and eager students... but no clay!!! Help us light the fire in our students with this clay!
We are a Title 1, inner-city school, located in southern CT.
Our school is a Pre-K through grade 8 school, with the majority of students being English language learners. 100% of our student body receives free/reduced lunches and free breakfast daily. Every class receives art education at least once a week and the arts play a major role in my students' lives and community. When our school was built, 10+ year ago, our administration put a lot of funding into our art program which provided us with a state of the art kiln. Sadly, as with many schools, funding and supplies become more scarce every year. Even with these budget constraints, our administration is always able to provide us with the essentials. Unfortunately, clay is not considered an essential supply because there are many schools that do not have a kiln for firing.
My Project
When we ran out of clay, over 4 years ago, the students used to constantly ask when they could do another clay project. It has been so long since we have had clay to use, that they have stopped asking. This would be such a nice surprise for my students because they have always been very successful with all of our clay projects. Using clay to sculpt and create teaches the students about different cultures, historical references, real world connections, form, shape, texture, patterning, and the list goes on and on! Because clay is so versatile, this clay will be used by our entire student body, grades Pre-K through grade 8!
From pinch pots to throwing a vessel on a pottery wheel, it has been my experience that clay is my students' favorite medium!
My students can create pieces of art that will stand the test of time and expand their creative experiences!
