My class is at a Title One school. It is an ethnically diverse school. My third grade class is diverse group of students from all across the country. The students come to me with unique backgrounds. Teaching in a low-income, high poverty school, my students face challenges everywhere, at school and at home.
Despite the struggles that many of them face, they want to learn and explore the world through reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and technology.
I want to give them the foundation they need to follow their dreams and prepare them for life.
My Project
As a teacher, I want my students to love reading and become life-long learners. Two Kindle Fires with child-proof cases and memory cards will be a great tool and addition to our classroom experience. The Kindle Fires are an excellent resource for providing new books to students on all levels. The Kindles will also encourage and motivate readers because they are a new and exciting way to explore books. Students will not only be able to read books on their level without feeling as if they are being judged by their peers, but I will also be able to differentiate literacy and math instruction for students. Multiplication is a big part of the third grade math curriculum. Students need fun ways to develop math skills and memorize their multiplication facts. There are multiple apps available for the Kindle Fire that will provide a fun way for them to do just that.
With the Kindle Fire, students will be able to do more than practice reading and math, because the Kindles will be used to help them begin to develop technology and research skills that will help with college and career readiness.
In third grade, I begin to expose students to technology and learning skills that help them create their own learning experiences by exploring and researching topics of interest. The Kindles will be a huge resource in this process.
The Kindle Fires will also enrich learning in science and social studies. Virtual labs and field trips will be at the students' finger tips with a Kindle Fires. For example, students will be able to explore life at Plymouth at the time of the first Thanksgiving, through a Scholastic virtual field trip. The opportunities for learning are endless with two Kindle Fires.
