My classroom is approximately 98% African American and roughly 70% receive free or reduced school lunch based on their family’s income. A large percentage of my students are from military families, and have family members that are deployed for a long period of time. This leaves one parent to bear the burden of making sure everything is taken care of at home – including their children’s education. In addition, my class is an inclusion classroom where 31% of my students receive special education services. As you can see, the challenges are great that my students face each day before even entering the classroom.
Our school has an extremely transient student body where we have students constantly moving in from other schools. A major obstacle I face is making sure that all my students are reading and writing on grade level with 100% comprehension along with helping them develop a love for reading.
Having a variety of reading resources such as reading/writing comprehension games will help me reach students in small group settings. This will help make reading more enjoyable for my students as well as targeting students that are at-risk of failing by differentiating my reading instruction.
Your help in funding this project will ensure that my students feel more successful in reading and writing. You will also be helping those military students who move in from other places feel more at ease when they are reading and responding to literature in small groups with fun and meaningful activities. Thank you in advance for your consideration in funding this project!
