My Students
I work with students with special needs in a high school setting in the upstate of South Carolina. My students require many modifications and adaptations in instruction and curriculum in order to allow them to show what they know and to stay engaged in their learning.
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” (Benjamin Franklin).
My students vary in their individual needs, but all have the same desire to succeed and achieve to their fullest potential; they are bright, eager to learn, and hard-working! They struggle with basic academic, vocational, behavioral, and social skills but they all show great determination and perseverance in reaching their goals! They do best with engaging, hands-on learning activities that allow them to create using their individual strengths.
My Project
Nutrition and the chance to become more independent are two important skills students in my Food Service class need in order to be successful as they learn the basics of cooking and kitchen safety. My goal with this grant is to ensure that they are becoming better prepared to safely and successfully navigate a kitchen-both at school and at home!
With Hands-On manipulatives to provide extra practice reinforcing skills taught in our kitchen, my students are on the fast-track to be able to state: "I did it...All By Myself!" Becoming more independent will help students with social-distancing and allow them to become more aware of safety and nutritional needs as they navigate through our commercial kitchen.
My students will also be able to strengthen fine motor dexterity and role-play which will assist them in independently managing food prep at home preparing snacks and simple meals.
