My students are so inquisitive. These culturally diverse southern third graders attend a school that is around 50% free and reduced lunch and try so hard every day to do their best. Even though my homeroom is only 25 students the staff collaborates and shares students so I see many students in our building. It makes our neighborhood school very tight nit.
We do a great job of making due with what we have despite lack of funding & budget constraints.
Right now we are a class of energetic students which is split quite evenly half boys and half girls. These students happily work with whatever supplies we have. Our goal is to provide them with what we can and make their learning relevant and personal every day.
My Project
As I set up my classroom this year, I noticed a huge problem. The books were sparse and didn’t match the makeup of my class. Every student deserves to have books where the main characters are like them. These books will support all students in understanding that there are many ways to be a kid and different is okay! Students need to see themselves and their friends in the books they read. Providing a diverse literacy environment that represents all kinds of kids and families will help create empathy, understanding, and acceptance.
We have a diverse classroom community and books are one way to make our classrooms show that here, everyone is welcome just as you are.
Your donation will ensure there are gender and racially diverse books in our classroom, so every student feels like who they are is represented. I will also be able to read these books aloud to the students, further normalizing our beautifully diverse community.
