My Students

I must be frank: in my classroom, I am the new kid on the block, literally. After several years at my first school, I find myself teaching at a new school, brimming with possibilities, and barriers.

Right now, my learning support students' greatest barrier to higher education is limited access to literacy technology.

More than half of the students on my new roster need access to digital books and audiobooks, to boost and support their grade-level reading and writing.

My Project

I've been using Kindle Fire tablets in the classroom for years with my former elementary students. With each tablet, it's elegantly easy for a teacher, like me, to control access to school-appropriate content, like digital books and audiobooks. This bolsters responsibility and trust in each student.

The design is clear: I actually want my students to take these tablets home.

It's tough to read "Pride and Prejudice" when you're walking to an after-school job, but it's child's play when you're passively listening to the audiobook version. Is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet too obscure to read? Not when you're listening to Meryl Street narrating it!
