My Students
"Art is never wrong!", shouted one of my students recently. Don't you just love that attitude? I certainly wish I felt that way growing up. I love to give my students the experience of creating authentic pieces of art. I am amazed at the uninhibited level of talent in my room.
I can't believe I am starting my third year as a first grade teacher.
Our school is a city school in an older neighborhood in California. I work with 22 first graders. We are quite the mix of cultural and economic backgrounds. It is an amazing place to be.
My Project
We love art. I firmly believe that it's what makes us human. Even though studies show that creating art helps in both reading and math skills, our district is faced with huge budget cuts both this year and next. We barely have money for pencils. When this happens the first cuts always seem to be the arts. Now we are being asked to take a cut in pay so the money I might have been able to devote to my classroom is going to be tight.
I would so love to add painting with acrylics to my art program.
I think the experience of creating real paintings on artists canvas would be such a special experience for these eager and talented 6 and 7 year old's. They would then feel like the "real" artists they are. The experience might just be the spark for the next Picasso!
