This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For the past 12 years, our students conducted a phenotype/genotype research project to test an individual's ability to taste the chemical PTC. This is a well-studied trait that may provide some evolutionary advantage to those who possess it.
Our research project is based on an analysis of heredity and genetic expression of the PTC gene (TAS2R38), or the bitterness-tasting gene, as a function of cultural diversity.
Although there may be regional differences, ultimately, we are more similar than we are different.
Unfortunately, such projects are expensive. To continue our research project, we need PCR primers, taste strips, GelGreen DNA stain and PCR beads.
Obtaining the chemical reagents is beyond the scope of my public school. We will not be able to carry out our research without the support of caring individuals like you. Help us make this project possible for this cohort of students.
