Algebra That Clicks

My Students

I teach high school Special Education in one of the poorest communities in my state. Even though my students' families live "paycheck to paycheck," they deserve the best there is of everything!

On the first day of class, 90% of my students let me know that they have either never passed a math class or have not passed a math class since elementary school.

I set out to change that narrative. I want them to be successful not only in my classroom, but in all of their classes.

They are really a great group of students, but they have each been handed a rough hand to play. 75% of my class has a parent incarcerated. 60% of my students are being raised by either their grandparents or another family member that is not their parent.

My Project

These materials will help bring Algebra to life for my students. Each of the students in my Algebra class are at risk of failure. This is their second time taking Algebra 1. In an effort to increase their understanding, I am using concrete representational abstract (CRA) framework.

My students would greatly benefit from having manipulatives available for use that will connect concrete manipulatives to the abstract ideas of positive and negative integers, variables and algebraic equations in general.

It is my goal for each of my students to be successful in not only my class, but also life and I feel like this would be the perfect opportunity to make that goal reality!
