My Students
Without question, the students in my algebra and honors algebra classes are EXTREMELY bright! This is what sets them apart. They have been learning at an accelerated pace and crave the knowledge that a challenging class presents. They are always willing to put in the hard work and get great satisfaction out of problem solving. It is fantastic to watch them work both independently and with their peers to derive solutions. It amazes me to watch them troubleshoot, correct themselves, and correct each other.
It takes a great amount of work ethic to tackle a high school level course a grade level or more ahead of your peers.
They must have a deep understanding of the mathematical prerequisites to hit the ground running. Their work ethic must include the tenacity to stick with a problem or concept until it makes sense. The willingness to spend more time on classroom discussion and daily homework sets them apart.
It is very easy to see that they are most likely the future engineers, scientists, doctors, programmers, businessmen, nurses, developers, and undoubtedly leaders in whatever path they choose. I am super proud and grateful to teach each of them.
My Project
My math classroom is striving to integrate technology frequently into the curriculum we use daily. Technology provides modeling and visualizing capabilities, fluency practice, and both formative and summative assessments with instant feedback for students. We currently use technology to complete weekly fluency practice, practice concepts with programs that give the student instant feedback, and to complete STEM projects.
Given that the implementation of technology in classrooms is critical, there still needs to be a balance with working problems paper and pencil style - the good old fashioned way!
I have identified numerous opportunities for curriculum best practices to include in the classroom such as note taking strategies, lesson guidance, formative assessments and daily practice within a curriculum called All Things Algebra. I hope to be able to provide all of these curriculum enrichment opportunities for my students using this as a supplement to my daily instruction.
In addition, I am seeking to integrate more rich, open ended math tasks into the curriculum. I have identified a few books that will help build a mathematical mindset and provide low floor, high ceiling math tasks for all our students. I hope to integrate these rich tasks into our classroom as soon as possible.
