My students need 20 digital stopwatches and 5 digital kitchen scales so that we can relate Algebra to real life.

My Students
"Why do we have to learn this?" As a math teacher, I am often asked this important question by my junior-high students. For many of them, Algebra seems to be a mysterious, abstract, irrelevant subject. These tools in my project will help them connect math concepts to real-world examples.
My school is a 7-8 junior high.
Our town is isolated, and many families struggle even in good economic times. I teach students with a wide variety of math skills - from special education students who struggle with multiplication, to gifted students who work on Algebra during their 7th grade year. These materials will help all levels of students.
My Project
We are requesting 20 stopwatches and one digital scale. These tools will allow us to measure and quantify events and things around us and relate those to Algebra (instead of just reading examples out of a dated textbook). For example, reading a story problem about Joe dropping a tennis ball off a roof and using a quadratic equation to figure out how long it takes is not particularly engaging for most students. Actually dropping tennis balls from many different heights, timing them, graphing results, using the equation to make predictions, and discussing real vs. theoretical results is not only more engaging, but it helps students learn valuable skills that can be applied in other classes and in their adult lives.
Math is more than doing problems out of a book.
Math is thinking and reasoning about the world around us, and learning to solve complex problems. These materials will help engage my students and teach them to be better thinkers.
