Algebra in Action: Building a Thinking Classroom!

Help me give my students a Building Thinking Classroom! Vertical whiteboards to encourage collaborative problem-solving, collaborative task ideas, and materials to enhance learning…plus snacks so students feel cared for, focused, and ready to learn.

My Project

Getting students motived to learn mathematics can be a challenge but is rewarding when students make connections to the curriculum and to each other!

I’m excited to bring the Building Thinking Classroom model to my Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 students—an approach that gets students out of their seats, thinking deeply, and working together in meaningful ways.

This project includes magnetic whiteboards to create vertical learning spaces where students can stand, collaborate, and engage in problem-solving as a team. These spaces encourage active participation and make thinking visible for everyone in the room.

To support random grouping and build a stronger classroom community, I’m also including large playing cards. These allow students to be grouped quickly and fairly each day, helping reduce social barriers and making sure all students feel included and valued.

To help facilitate learning and creative collaborative thinking I’ve added whiteboard markers and erasers, as well as a book of tasks to help prepare my students.

And because learning happens best when students’ basic needs are met, this project also includes snacks to help students feel fed, focused, and cared for—ready to engage with challenging math in a supportive environment.
