Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Algebra- the branch of mathematics that deals with general statements of relations, utilizing letters and other symbols to represent specific sets of numbers" (dictionary.com) Remembering high school math?
In this part of Texas, I teach Algebra I to 32 8th grade girls who are on the path to college.
Ninety percent of them are from low-income households, but they don't let that barrier interfere with their dream. They have curiosity, integrity, self-respect, and a great amount of persistence! My school is part of a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in under-served communities for success in college and in life.
My Project
Our school just entered its fourth and final year of being a fully grown middle school, so our resources are limited. The founding class of the school just entered 8th grade, and it's the first year of 8th grade. Girls are known for being visual learners. Their brains respond best to new information when presented by making connections to what they already know. The manipulatives will allow the girls to see their own work come to life. This allows for making connections to verbal algebra and confidence-building within class.
You have the power to make Algebra I fun!
You are empowering the young ladies of the future! Thank you for supporting me and my young ladies through their early educational career. Even for the smallest donation, we thank you!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
