By the time my students get to high school, they often have struggled for years in math. Most of them will even tell me that math is their least favorite subject, and that they've been dreading high school algebra. It is my goal as their teacher to make math something they love - or at the very least, don't hate anymore! All of my students receive special education supports, and my class is designed especially for them. We work toward the same algebra standards as the general education classrooms.
Algebra tiles help my students visualize the basics of equations, and provide a building block for even trickier topics down the road.
Algebra tiles are colored blocks that can be used to represent algebraic equations or expressions. Students can move the pieces around to symbolize what happens when we solve for a variable.
With a classroom set of algebra tiles and activities, we will be able to work together as a whole group and individually to depict algebra concepts and make things more hands-on. My students have been used to a lot of pencil & paper activities for math, and algebra tiles will make sense of a difficult subject.
