Alaska Photographers

Help me give my students two cameras to help in our photography class and to produce our school yearbook.

My Students

My students live in a rural village in Alaska. They are Alutiiq natives and their families survive on subsistence living; hunting, fishing, and gathering. The culture of subsistence changes with the seasons, from berries to salmon and halibut. Like most villages in Alaska, there is a high rate of alcohol and substance abuse. Suicide attempts are common. The literacy rate is low and most kindergarten students begin school two years behind the norm in terms of their readiness for school. The drop-out rate is high.

My Project

These cameras will help our students in our photography class as we prepare a monthly school newsletter and our annual school yearbook. While most students have access to a camera on their phones, these Canon Digital Cameras will help them understand photography on a more professional level.

Our area of Alaska is beautiful and often the subject of professional photographers around the world.

It is hoped that this class will inspire our local students to become professional photographers one day as well. Regardless, our students will expand their vision of their community through the lens of a camera.
