Alaska History for Alaskans

My students need several books about Alaska history for their Alaska history class.

My Students

My students live in a rural fishing village in Alaska. They are Yup'ik natives (the largest native tribe in Alaska) and their families survive on subsistence living--hunting and gathering. The culture of fishing changes with the seasons, from salmon to trout to herring to smelts.

Like most villages in Alaska, there is a high rate of alcohol and substance abuse.

Suicide attempts are common. The literacy rate is low and most kindergarten students begin school 2 years behind the norm in terms of their readiness for school. The drop-out rate is high.

My Project

There is not a single good resource for Alaska history. Multiple books are needed to provide resources for my students in their Alaska History class. The history of Alaska is ancient. Natives have lived here for thousands of years, but their history is under reported. For about a hundred years, Russians dominated our culture, and more recently, Alaskans became U.S. citizens. Throughout this span, the many stories of Alaskans citizens--from fishermen and fur trappers to teachers to oil rig workers, miners, and loggers, and others--our history is rich and varied. These few books are but some examples of first-hand accounts which can enrich the study of my students.
