My Project
Many of my Alaska high school students have never had garden fresh vegetables or herbs. By purchasing a hydroponic grow system for our classroom, they will be able to grow and cultivate their own food, and then learn how to cook with it. In the fall semester, we visit the local farmers market and partner with our local community gardens to get fresh produce. The students love it! I was surprised by how many of them told me they had never even seen a farm-fresh vegetable. They were delighted that they “actually tasted good” when compared to our store produce.
After Covid hit and many shelves were bare and food insecurity became more prevalent.
I decided to teach my culinary students about foraging and edible plants. This has become a very popular unit. I want to introduce hydroponics because we have snow on the ground most of the school year and this can help students learn to take care of themselves, even in Alaska.
Having fresh herbs like basil, chives, and rosemary all year will benefit our culinary class by lowering the grocery bill. Growing fresh lettuce and tomatoes will also help and inspire teens to eat healthier foods. Thank you for supporting our students!
