My Project
Alaska Day is my favorite way to spin the toughest season of the year- February. Alaska Day places an emphasis on reading books and doing a craft celebrating Native Culture-dream catcher. It also places emphasis on loving Alaska.Alaska is a place that is absolutely beautiful and stunning. However, our winter months can be tough both on my students and myself. By creating opportunities for my students to positively immerse in the culture of Alaska we as a team will be able to stay emotionally positive.
The Three Little Pigs, If you give a Moose a Muffin, and Recess at Ten Below all embrace the realities of Alaska in a playful style.
It is especially important to me that we have stories and crafts stemming around Alaska because I want my students to love their hometown. Currently the curriculum that we present to our students comes from Texas. While Texas is a great state it is not Alaska.
Alaska is like no other state. We have many Native American tribes that have a strong presence in our communities. I want to be able to include Native American crafts as a special activity. The dream catcher that was chosen will be used to showcase the Ojibwe tribe. This tribe believes that a dreamcatcher can catch bad dreams and let good dreams pass through.
We have animals like moose that we see on a daily basis. Alaska is a diverse community and deserve to also be represented in the information we give to our students.
