AKPK Sensory Room

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

School wide our classrooms are inclusive environments for all students. There are some students who require a break from the mainstream classroom to reset their emotions due to overwhelming stimuli. The sensory room will offer a variety of seating, lighting, noise, texture, and movement breaks to assist these students in self-regulating their emotions.

All students do not process daily expectations or routine changes the same as everyone else.

The sensory room will offer a quiet and safe space to discuss through play how they feel and learn more effective ways to communicate their feelings. It can feel unsettling to a student when they are frustrated, but scary when they can't communicate that with words.

Still for other children that were created with more joy than can be contained, they need additional movement breaks to calm their bodies so their minds can focus and learn. The sensory room will also provide safe swinging, jumping, climbing, ordering, and building items that will allow these students to refocus on the importance of instruction in the classroom.

We have begun to compile items we need to complete this sensory room for our students, but are missing a few pieces included in this project. It is my hope to have this project completed as soon as possible so our students may benefit from the effects of an additional support environment.
