Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone has a story from middle school and not surprising, most are not stories we enjoy telling. Middle school is the apex of teasing and bullying, and it has gotten worse with cyber-bullying. Now, bullying and harassing can be done even further away from the adults.
The majority of my students come from a low income urban area.
Many of them have to take public transportation to and from school every day and many of those students are required to take more than one bus, due to the wide area the school services. For a large number of them, just getting to school on a daily basis is an major achievement.
My Project
"Miss, there is nothing you can do about bullying and haters. We have to do something about it. We have to let each other know it's not okay to be mean."
This was a statement from one of my students when I asked them what they thought the adults could do to help solve the bullying problem at our school. My students have shown a willingness and desire to be part of the solution. They want to help educate their peers about the dangers of bullying, including cyber-bullying, by creating a series of anti-bullying Public Service Announcements, using digital cameras and iMovie. Their plan is to design, create and edit their announcements and then run an assembly for each of the grade levels at our school. To do this, they need 2 digital cameras, with video capability, and the memory cards needed to capture images/video.
By ordering copies of "Bullying in School," I hope to give my students a resource they can use to being the process of combating the bullying issues at our school.
Middle school is hard.
Students are changing, growing and developing into the people they are going to be when they grow up. Everyone recognizes that there are problems in our school around bullying, but the adults have yet to come up with an effective solution to address the problems. There are punishments and "deterrents," but maybe my students are right. Students have to take the lead in educating each other. Maybe then, change will take place. I for one, am willing to let them try.
