Help me give my students the opportunity to sculpt detailed clay ahupua'a models, fostering a tactile storytelling experience that illustrates the importance of aina (land) stewardship and environmental responsibility within the traditional Hawaiian system.

My Project
"The clay, sculpting tools, paints, and base materials I'm requesting are essential for my students to bring their ahupua'a visions to life in three dimensions. Using clay allows for a tactile, kinesthetic learning experience that deepens their understanding of the ahupua'a system. They'll physically mold the mountains (mauka), the plains, and the ocean (makai), understanding how water flow and resource management were interconnected. The sculpting tools will help them create intricate details, like lo'i (taro patches) and fishponds, while the paints will allow them to artistically represent the diverse ecosystems within the ahupua'a.
Deepen understanding of the ahupua'a system: I want my students to move beyond textbook definitions and truly grasp the interconnectedness of the land, water, and people in traditional Hawaiian society.
By creating their own ahupua'a, students will develop a stronger understanding of the importance of land stewardship and environmental sustainability.
This project will provide a platform for students to express their artistic talents and work together, sharing ideas and resources, fostering a sense of community and teamwork.
"My students are truly remarkable. They bring a unique blend of curiosity, resilience, and aloha to the classroom every day. They are eager to learn about their Hawaiian heritage and are passionate about protecting the environment. What I love most about them is their ability to see the world with fresh eyes and their willingness to embrace new challenges. They are creative, compassionate, and always ready to support one another. They have a strong sense of community and are deeply connected to the land and the ocean. They are a joy to teach. I love to see their faces light up when they learn something new. They are the future stewards of our 'aina, and I am incredibly proud to be their teacher."
