This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have the privilege of teaching in a self-contained special education Kindergarten classroom. All of my students have a variety of diagnosed disabilities, and in spite of many obstacles placed before them by a world that is created for one type of person, they continue to make progress academically, socially, and in their independence. My students have a tenacity to succeed like you wouldn't believe and senses of humor that keep us in stitches constantly. There is never a dull moment in our room. It is filled with love, kindness, and a curiosity to learn.

Every student in my classroom looks forward to recess, a special time that is so much more than "playing".

Recess is not just a time to go outdoors. It is a time where my students fellowship with one another, practice gross and fine motor skills, and reinforce concepts used in the classroom. Believe it or not, childhood playground games require basic math, shape identification, spatial awareness, rhyming, turn taking, and critical thinking skills. These are all skills we work on everyday in the classroom. Recess is a time where our students put those skills to use in a relaxed setting, but with the support of teachers. So much academic and social emotional learning happens at recess. It is an important part of our school day.

Therefore you can imagine the audible groans and disappointment when it is an indoor recess day. Weather can be unpredictable, therefore sometimes we simply cannot go outside. Enter this project. The fellowship, turn taking, counting, shape identification, spatial awareness, rhyming, fine motor, and gross motor skills do not have to stop when Recess is indoors. This project is meant to give my classroom supplies to make an exciting, stimulating, and fun indoor recess experience.
