Agents of Change: Reading Biographies in American History

My Students

My students come from many different backgrounds, reflecting a vast array of ethnic heritages, languages spoken, and economic classes. Yet, they come together forming an amazing student body that is passionate about learning. They have shown to their teachers time and time again that they accept academic challenges and strive to excel.

My US History students are amazing individuals who seek engaging learning experiences in which they can interact with and investigate history, thus becoming historians themselves.

Each year, I have the opportunity of creating classroom activities for over 150 students that allows them to participate in critical thinking regarding our nation's past. Once they complete my course, they do not merely possess a basic knowledge of history. My students will then have the civic literacy skills and critical thinking ability to enable them to succeed as an adult in both society and college.

My Project

Oftentimes, the reading of biographies is contained to presidents and other famous leaders of government or the military. This project seeks to introduce a more diverse set of biographies into the classroom that cover figures from religious leaders to inventors and musicians.

Through reading biographies of figures from Louis Armstrong to Anne Hutchinson, students will connect with individuals who helped shape their time.

Utilizing the concept of the Great Man of History theory, students will analyze their chosen biography to assess the extent to which their figure shaped their time or was shaped by the context of their period. Following the completion of their readings, students will present their figure in a unique activity, introducing their contributions to American history.
