My Students

My students are the best! In our drama classes, we do everything from makeup applications to stage fighting to performing at the zoo! This year has been heartbreaking. With being out of school a month, our kids' sense of safety and sanctuary has been compromised. Hurricane Ida ravaged school buildings and decimated materials and supplies.

Creating a safe place to fall is the goal here.

One sometimes forgets that teens are trying to be grownups, but really aren't. After Hurricane Ida, my kids are traumatized and need comforting. Using my space as a place of nurturing where students are welcome to relax, journal, and be heard can be beneficial not only to the theatre community but the whole school. Counselors can access intimacy for sharing and caring.

This year will be even more challenging. My students have just gotten over the forced COVID isolation and virtual learning. They had just returned to in-school learning when Hurricane Ida hit. We were all gone for a month and it was wonderful to reconnect.

My students come from diverse backgrounds and cultures. My goal this year is to provide, through drama, a safe place to land after the storm.

My Project

Theatre is improvisation. We have to improvise now in order to better serve our students after Hurricane Ida. This project will provide space for journaling and can be used by the counselors, other teachers as well as this theatre teacher.

A safe place to land is what we all want.

Providing a colorful space that is welcoming, inclusive provides a safety net for sharing traumatic events. The journals will give a writing tool that is for the purpose of recording not just trauma, but joys as well. Imagine the ease of communicating when you know your words are written by you but supported by teachers who care.
