Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students at my school are visionaries, excited to take-on or push forward the next internet trend using what they have learned in school. They are future engineers, entrepreneurs, and small-business owners in Miami, Florida. Leadership and group collaboration are natural desires for our students.
Many of our students' schedules don't have the space for elective classes due to their needs of additional intensive reading and mathematics.
It is because of their scheduling limitations that our students greatly look forward to the extra curricular opportunities following the school day.
My students' backgrounds reflect the rich diversity of our city. 54% of our school's students identify as Hispanic, and 45% identify as Black or African American. 97% of students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The challenges my students face at home without a doubt play a factor in their learning, but when we are in school I teach them to control what they can when they can. Most of that control lies with what they learn and accomplish at school.
My Project
I am a firm believer in the power of arts in education. As a product of Title I schooling from my K-12 public experience, I have seen first-hand what extra-curricular arts programs can do to foster purpose in disadvantaged students and create a sense of belonging for them in the school system. I was one of those students.
Our current selection of arts electives in my school boils down to two options: band and chorus.
My project hopes to add Culinary Arts to this list in the future, starting first as an after-school program, as soon as we can.
I started a culinary/cooking club in my high school the same way. This time, however, there isn't a kitchen with stations as I had with the help of my high school's ESE department. We would be starting from scratch.
Students will engage throughout the year first in learning to cook for themselves, then a group like their family, and finally a different group for an event. Lessons will cover topics from safety and sanitation to the history and science of foods. Students will learn how mathematics applies to everyday cooking in measuring ingredients with scales and measuring cups. They will also follow recipes to prep ingredients for cooking using knives, cutting boards, bowls, graters, and can openers. In the last stage of executing a recipe, they will be using bakeware, cookware, blenders, and colanders. To keep safe, we will have oven mitts to handle temperature, aprons for each student, and a first aid kit to mitigate possible accidents.
With the start of this after-school program, students will have the opportunity to express themselves in a way our school hasn't been able to offer in the past. The impact of that expression is life-changing and priceless. It's what education is all about.
