African Songs, African Masks

I am a general music teacher at a K-8 school. My students are mainly Caucasian with an increasing number of Hispanic children.

Every spring I teach a unit on African music and stories to my grade 2 students. I try to bring to them a culture that is not represented in our community but is represent in our country and the world. By funding this proposal you will be helping students connect with another culture that they normally don't have the opportunity to experience. My students will come to appreciate the art and culture of the African continent. This is my second year at this school. Last year I noticed a lack of teaching about other cultures. I would like to increase the cultural awareness of my students and the school. This spring during my unit on African music and stories I would like to put together a couple of short plays the students will perform for other classes. Using percussion instruments, singing and story telling. The masks that students make with these supplies would be used to tell the stories in a more authentic African style. While teaching about African culture and the importance of masks in that culture.

I need a donor or donors that will help me purchase art supplies for my African unit. With these art supplies students will be able to experience African music, stories and art, bringing the cultures of Africa to life.

Your help will increase my students awareness of other cultures in a fun, entertaining manner. My project brings African culture to a community that is not African or African American.
