African Mask Project for Black History Classes

Help me give my students supplies to empower and engage students in African American Studies, I need resources that reflect diverse voices, foster critical thinking, and honor Black history, culture, and contributions often overlooked in traditional curricula.

My Project

I want to create a welcoming, inclusive space where students feel seen, valued, and connected. In our African American Studies course, we explore culture, identity, and heritage — and making African masks together offers a powerful, hands-on way to build community.

With the right supplies, students can express themselves creatively while honoring traditions rooted in African history.

This project will help us turn our classroom int

While they make the mask, I would love to play music from the Bluetooth speaker that matches the theme of African American Studies like civil rights music or music that showcases black excellence and pride as well as explore popular music from the diaspora.

The folders will house their project materials, and the clay can be used to make 3d elements to their mask and/or small accompaniment sculptures akin to those of Mali or Great Zimbabwe.

These masks will anchor the room in community and traditional art forms from West Africa and the Caribbean.
