African-American Teen Books for Library

My project needs multiple copies of popular African-American teen fiction.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Doyle's classroom raised $890

This project is fully funded

I am a librarian at a middle school in San Francisco, grades 6-8. We have about 500 students, mostly Asian-American, Latino, and African-American. About 70 percent qualify for free or reduced lunches. Most of my students are avid readers -- IF I can provide them with the types of books they like. However, my book budget is limited, and I can't always buy multiple copies of popular books. This is difficult because many students want to read the same books their friends are reading! We also have an achievement gap, where African-American and Latino students are not scoring as well as other students on the standardized tests. It is so important that these students find books that interest them, so that they will practice reading and increase their academic skills. As part of this particular project, I want to buy extra copies of the most popular African-American titles, so that I have them available for students when they visit the library to check out a book. This project will help me acquire those much-needed books and display them at the front of the library. I will also personally recommend them to students. It will mean so much to students to be able to find the books they want, and it will help them to improve their reading skills.
