Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I will be teaching AP African American Studies for the first time this year and could not be more excited. The class is a mix of juniors and seniors and it is our goal to make the class dynamic with seminal readings, art, music, and the full kaleidoscope of Black excellence. We will be co-teaching so that the class can be inclusive and all students can be supported with complex text and fundamental writing skills.

We are requesting three fantastic books to support the students learning and understanding of the contributions of African Americans to the United States.

The three books are representative of the continuity of struggle and perseverance that have characterized the Black experience since 1619.

"Between the World is Me," is a beautiful book that profoundly explores the experience of Black men in a country that constantly tries to make them small. I was able to get a deeper understanding of my own father through reading the book.

"When and Where I Enter," profoundly impacted my life when I read it in college. No one should have to go to college to learn about their history. This book is beautifully written and very accessible for high school students.

Lastly, we stand on the shoulders of Frederick Douglass so reading his words will be a powerful experience as the larger society tries to wipe away many of the gains acquired in the last fifty years. Thank you so very much for your generosity and commitment in funding this mini-grant.
