Africa Alive Via Literacy

My class needs 120 copies of Facing the Lion.

We are "Getting Booked." I teach 7th grade geography in a school that has embraced teaching literacy across all content areas. My Junior High is predominantly white and has not been exposed to other cultures outside their own.

My students have many stereotypes about Africa and many times have incorrect knowledge about the great continent of Africa. Even my African American students do not know the history of Africa and the positive history of their people.

I would like my students to read the book Facing the Lion about a young African boy living in Africa. The story shows the culture of the Maasai and how one African decides to beat all odds and help his people. I want all of my students to read this book and gain a better understanding of the Maasai people and Africa in general.

Our students only hear and see the negative side of Africa. As a geography teacher I want my African American students to learn the positive side of their history and for my other students to recognize that Africa has a lot to offer in all aspects of the world.
