This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work as a teacher librarian in a diverse and vibrant middle school. I run a GSA (Gender Sexuality Alliance) group and I am always looking for ways to support LGBTQ+ students at our school.
Having a wide variety of current and diverse LGBTQ+ titles is super important for our library, in order to make sure all voices are heard and affirmed.
Students are drawn to those titles as well, many of them members of the LGBTQ+ community or allies of the community. Others may just be interested in exploring different voices/experiences, and being able to access these titles can be eye-opening and enriching.
Additionally, seeing visible signs of support through flags, buttons, pins, signs, etc., throughout the school raises awareness and support of the LGBTQ+ community. Students can see and feel that the school is a safe space for them to simply be themselves, even if they are not able to do this elsewhere. LGBTQ+ students need our support, now more than ever.
