Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are from an economically-challenged district where many of them have families that work multiple jobs and struggle financially. Many are on a free- or reduced-lunch program. But that doesn't stop them from looking for the positive in situations!
Our Lion Leaders' Affirmation Station promotes positivity and the opportunity to brighten up many students' days!
Each week we fill up a bulletin board with tons of post-its with positive affirmations like, "You are special," "You make me smile," and "Smile! You are doing amazing things!" Each week, students are encouraged to take a post-it for themselves or a friend and to "spread the positivity." We are going through so many post-its because it has become such an amazing thing! Throughout the day, teachers are constantly seeing these positive affirmation post-its in students' notebooks, pencil cases, or on their chromebooks.
I have asked students in the past what they thought of the Affirmation Station and they all had awesome answers. Some said they would take one just to cheer themselves up, others would say they took one to give to a friend who was going through a hard time, and others even said that they would see a student that they didn't know that was having a rough day and sneak a post-it into their locker to cheer them up!
My students have a lot going on that should bring them down and weigh heavily on them. But many have used our Affirmation Station to raise them up to where they deserve to be!
