My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a "real" book? Not a little kid book but a real chapter book? Most of my students have never had this experience. They love getting lost in the adventures of Magic Tree House books and we need class sets so that all of my students can have that experience.

I work in a low-income school in very poor area of Arizona.

All of my students live well below the poverty line and rarely get a chance to leave the neighborhood. All of the students in the school are at a significant disadvantage simply because of the zip code in which they live. I teach special education, which means that my students are at an even greater disadvantage. They are significantly behind their peers in all academic areas. This, however, does not stop them from being the hardest working students in the school. Last year, they made two years of progress in reading and we are shooting for even more this year! (I will have the same students I did last year, plus a few more.) Now that my students can read, they want to read everything they can get their hands on, especially Magic Tree House books!

My Project

The two class sets of Magic Tree House books I have selected will serve two purposes within my classroom. First, it will provide my students with the opportunity to read real books while still receiving the support they need by reading as a group. They still struggle to read independently but desperately want to read real books instead of the "baby books" they are used to. Last year, I read Magic Tree House books out loud to my students and they absolutely loved them. I can only imagine how much their reading skills will improve once they can read the books on their own. The second purpose for these books is that they will tie into field trips I have planned for the school year. We will read "Dark Day in the Deep Sea" before we go to the local aquarium and "Lions at Lunchtime" before our overnight trip to the zoo. (I have obtained scholarships for both trips.) These books will provide us with great background information before our exciting field trips.

These books are not just books for my students.

They are a window to worlds they never knew existed. While I cannot take my students to the ocean or Africa, I can take them out of the neighborhood that most have never left. The zoo and the aquarium may not sound like a big deal to most people, but they are great adventures for my students. Mostly, though, this project will help my students see that there are great and wonderful things waiting for them if they make education a priority.
