Students at my school are eager to learn about the world around them and share what they already know about the world. During shared reading, we read Scholastic, Let's Find Out and they get so excited to learn about nonfiction topics. They love the fact that they're reading a "magazine" with real pictures and information.
Nonfiction resources are limited and needed at my school.
My students love nonfiction topics because they are interesting, relatable, offers concrete examples for understanding and they are fun to learn about.
My Project
I am requesting thirty two subscription to Scholastic News for Grade 2; thirty-two copies of Scholastic News Science Reader: Animals for Grade 2, and thirty-two copies of Scholastic News Science Reader: Plants Grade 2. Scholastic magazines are a great media literacy resource for students to learn about nonfiction. These magazines offer vivid pictures and important information that's easy to understand. Topics covered in these magazines are both interesting and engaging.
Scholastic magazines are a form of media literacy that is extremely engaging for students.
This form of media literacy has always been an important part of my teaching. When I use Scholastic magazines, my students get very excited to find out what they are going to learn about. Conversation starts immediately around the vivid pictures and continues throughout the whole lesson. Students are amazed by all the new information they learn which triggers prior knowledge and more discussion about the topic.
