My students need 9 Science supplies, including a pack of Diffraction Grating Glasses, a Super Slinky and Stand, 10 stopwatches and a Physics Made Simple Guide.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Davis's classroom raised $614

Engaging middle level students in active science investigations is essential for true learning to occur. Our students attend a 2 year middle school in New York. We are an urban school district with moderate level of students in poverty. We are increasingly dealing with more high needs students with limited resources. Many of our students have attended different elementary school and are lacking in a solid foundation of science skills.
All of our students study physical science in 8th grade. The curriculum focuses on Force and Motion, Properties of Matter, Heat and Energy, Light and Waves, Chemistry and Electricity and Magnetism. The students are required to learn a lot of concepts in a relatively short period time. They truly learn best while in engaged in inquiry based lessons and laboratory activities. The main obstacle we face is out dated equipment and lack of funds to update our science equipment and supplies.
By focusing on equipment and supplies of investigating Light and Waves the students will develop a higher level of understanding of these important concepts and will be able to apply a lot of the knowledge they obtain to the rest of the curriculum.
Students will be engaged in using supplies to investigate important concepts of Light and Waves. Physics Made Simple Guide book will bring the concepts of physics to middle level learners. The Super Slinky will allow for my demonstrations of different properties of waves. The students will then be working in lab groups to investigate wave behaviors and how wave properties affect those behaviors using their own Slinkys. Stop watches will be used to accurately calculate wave speed while producing different amplitudes.
After studying waves our students study light. A light box with power supply would be used to demonstrate the properties of light. Different types of mirrors and flashlights will allow for investigations into how light reflects and The Law of Reflection. Finally, the students will be looking through Diffraction Grating Glasses to understand how light diffracts.
By supporting this project you will be encouraging a solid foundation of science education at the middle school level. The concepts of Light and Waves are difficult for the average student to truly understand. The principles behind them are abstract and often based on mathematics that is a higher level than the student. By investigating these concepts using the inquiry activities from these materials student will be able to actual see higher level concepts and be able to explain them on an age appropriate level.
