My Students
My students and I will soon be starting a new school year, but we have a problem. A large part of our chemistry class involves math. The students need a scientific calculator, but many of them do not own one.
My students are amazing for so many reasons.
Our school is in a working class neighborhood in New Jersey and my students make do with very little. They are awesome because they really appreciate it when we do exciting experiments during our chemistry labs. Our school does not have some of the frills of more fortunate areas, but we find creative ways to provide an challenging environment for the children.
My Project
My students need 15 Solar TI-30x scientific calculators for use in our chemistry class. Our chemistry class is made up of equal parts of fun, hands-on activities and student centered learning. Students are often surprised how much math is involved in our lessons. They soon understand that math is the language of science, and the problem solving skills that they learn will prepare them for careers in the 21st century.
Many of our lessons involve the use of calculators; not fancy graphing ones, just calculators that can handle exponents and log functions. Unfortunately, many of my students do not own a calculator.
My students love our chemistry class.
When we do things like making ice cream they find out that science can actually be pretty cool. In addition to the fun stuff there is a lot of problem solving skills that they learn. These skills help too prepare them for careers in science.
We currently have to share calculators between students both during our lessons as well as during tests. I would love to have a classroom set so that each student would be able to make the most of our time together.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
