This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in the southwestern part of Houston and serves kids from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. We are a neighborhood school and a community in the truest sense of the word. We work very closely with our kids and their families to put them on the path to success. We are a diverse place in many ways and I am very fortunate to teach such a wonderful group of kids.

I have been incredibly fortunate to get support for projects in the past and the resources your generosity has purchased has helped my students use their imagination and go everywhere from Mount Olympus to Manassas, Virginia

My Project

I know graphic novels can make a huge difference in how my students understand the past. I have used them to teach Greek mythology, the US Constitution, and the Civil War. One series that my students have truly come to enjoy is the Dark Horse anthology series Rebels: A Well Regulated Militia, which chronicles the story of a Vermont solider and his family during the American Revolution and follows the lives of others during this time in a series of one shot issues. The stories are exciting and the art is engaging - the work takes the kids back in time.

I was thrilled earlier this year when a sequel to original was announced and I knew that I had to get a trade paperback collecting stories from the early years of American independence into my classroom.

The sequel, Rebels: These Free and Independent States is just as enjoyable as the first series and takes readers on a journey from the dangerous waters of the Atlantic to nascent District of Columbia. I am asking for a class set of this book for my students. A donation will help get a great story into my classroom.
