My Students

Science should be fun and science should be challenging. Science must be taught in such a way that students from a lifelong love of the subject matter, and, hopefully, pursue a career in the science field. I teach seventh-grade science at a magnet middle school in a downtown urban area. I have 103 diverse learners who are taught using a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum.

My students are diverse.

Our school has many nationalities represented. My students are high achieving and from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered a school of need according to the number of students who qualify financially for free lunch programs.

Some students come to school hungry and are not truly concerned with what we have to teach them because they are overwhelmed by the thoughts of where their next meal may come from. Other students question if we actually have something to teach them that will truly make a difference in their lives. Still others wonder if learning can truly be fun.

My Project

We are seeking donations to help purchase six additional Ollies robots, an iPad, and needed accessories (Bluetooth speakers, iPad case, and Apple pen) to enhance our Robotics Club after school and for take-home checkouts. Having the extra Ollies, will allow more students the opportunity to learn to code with the devices and iPads. Each year, my class participates in the “Hour of Code” and is inspired to expand their coding experience. It is important for kids to be able to continue learning about coding and robotics even outside of the classroom. Having access to these materials at home will level the playing field for ALL students in the club.

Coding is the new literacy - to thrive in tomorrow’s society, students must learn how to design, create, and express themselves with new technologies like robotics.

By putting these Sphero Robots into the hands of my scholars, we will impact the way they think in terms of coding. It will provide them with more hands-on activities to showcase their coding skills and to build their skills. My project is inspired by the Science Everywhere project by Lisa Brillo.
