Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students from Baltimore City are fortunate enough to have chrome books available for daily usage. These are students from lower socioeconomic communities that depend on exposure to technology while they are at school.
The mission of our school is to empower students to explore limitless options and achieve their dreams by developing the skills and habits in academics, advocacy, and character necessary to succeed in college and life.
Our students go on to attend public schools and private schools across the Baltimore region. Many students attending tuition-driven programs also receive scholarships. At KUVA, we strive for excellence in every area of the lives of our students. Our motto is Excellence Without Exception.
My Project
Hello everyone! Next week I am starting my first year as a teacher. I will be teaching seventh grade social studies in Baltimore City Public Schools. During student teaching, I used Nearpod to help run lessons in the classroom. I found out that my school will be unable to supply my students with this tool this year.
Nearpod is an important tool for creating differentiation in lessons.
It allows students to interact with their peers through bulletin boards and discussion questions. It is also a powerful tool for teaching students how to take notes at a college level.
Additionally, my students will be working on a 5-month National History Day project that will be presented in national competition. Nearpod will make a huge difference in coordinating all the different aspects of this enormous project. The students will receive an honors credit, and if they win, it will help them get admitted into a better high school.
Nearpod has amazing lessons that utilize VR, bulletin boards, quick response questions, drawing, and student-paced work options. I have purchased most of what I need for my students out of my own pocket. With those costs, and only just starting to get paid by the city, I unfortunately cannot afford to pay for this software right now on my own.
I also included a Chromebook, which is what my students utilize. While the school has provided me with a dell laptop, it is old and doesn't function well enough to work with digital tools in my classroom on a regular basis.
