Advanced Legal Research

My Project

I am Dr. Troy M. Smith, the Director of Legal Studies at a high school in Riviera Beach, Florida. This is a Title I community high school located within the Treasure Coast of Florida. As the Director of Legal Studies, my students are dedicated to studying the state specific law found within this jurisdiction.

As you may be aware, Florida has some of the most progressive and innovative educational pedagogy in the USA, including an entire virtual school for in state students and available student technology to support their research.

I have helped our program grow by securing FREE access to Lexis Nexus Uni & Westlaw through the Palm Beach County Library System. To access these databases, our students must travel to a library, apply for and receive a Library Card. By doing so, they are introduced to basic library research and also databases to help them find answers to questions they have. It's also an opportunity to do some reading on topics of interest.

I'm asking for this project to be funded to include a handheld tablet which can be projected onto a smartboard I currently have. I can do basic legal research and walk my students through step by step guidance at their table to complete assignments. I'm respectfully requesting consideration be given to fund this project ASAP to maximize the exposure to such a large, diverse student body who can learn a lot of valuable information from these lessons. My goal for this project is to equalize the playing field for students competing against students in larger schools who receive this instruction. My students are also trying to change the world from their own contributions one step at a time. They will also use this iPad for the Debate Team.
