ADHD and Asperger students strive to be great readers. I am a third grade teacher in Ohio. I teach ADHD and Asperger students. Our classroom model for instruction consist of small group instruction for reading and math. We strive to provide differentiated education for our students.
The biggest obstacle we are trying to overcome is to provide students with reading materials for both guided reading groups and independent reading. We have a limited number of trade books in a variety of genres. Currently, we are using a basel reader for reading instruction. The basel reader does not allow students to read books in various genres. Furthermore, students are unable to select books for independent reading. Finally, we have students reading at various levels, and we do not have enough reading materials to meet the needs of the students.
My students need leveled readers in grades 1 through grades four. The leveled readers come in nine sets each containing five books. The books are of various genres and focus on fluency and comprehension. All students in the classroom will be able to select books based on their level of instruction. Furthermore, students from years to come will be able to enjoy the books and look forward to adding new books in each level.
If this project is funded we will be able to provide students with leveled readers in various genres. Students will be able to increase fluency and comprehension of literary text. Students will feel empowered and experience success when they pick up a book and read it aloud. Reading is contagious when given various genres to select from.
