My students are all loving, caring, and hardworking. The many ways they are different is the reason for my writing this description on Donor's Choose. They all need something, and my job is to make sure they have what they need to be happy, healthy, and educated. Our school is in an inner city district, and my students face many challenges inside and outside of school. Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives, experiences I can't even imagine living through.
I have six diagnosed students with ADHD in my class, so learning can be a challenge for these students as well.
There are eight students on IEP's due to learning disabilities. There are also seven ELL students in my class. These students need a learning environment where they are looked at and treated as individuals.
They need me to acknowledge their challenges and give them support and unconditional love every day. They need choices and variety in their learning environment because one size truly does not fit all.
My Project
I have been inspired by a course on ADHD and by the beautiful students that struggle in my classroom every day. Too many students with ADHD are labeled as behavior problems. I feel like we are failing these students. I've learned a great deal about different supports I can give them; and there are also materialist things that would benefit these students greatly.
Students need choice in where to learn.
The typical desk and chair does not work for all students. No one would want to sit at a desk all day long, and ADHD kids especially need other options. Yet schools do not provide other options. My mission moving forward is to provide all of my students with an opportunity to try different options in the classroom and to discover where they truly learn best.
I already have a couch, camping chairs, pillows, beanbags, beach chairs, etc. that I have purchased that the students use throughout the day as well as the average desks and chairs. The stand up desks would be a great addition. The stand up desks will be used by students so that they do not have to sit all day at their desk. They can choose to work at the stand up desk. The wobble chairs would serve the same purpose. They would be another option for students to sit on while they work and they would especially benefit those students with ADHD. The goal is to have students engaged and focused on learning. The standing desks and wobble chairs would allow students to be comfortable while learning and in turn be more attentive.
