This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My class is full of movement and really enjoy hands on activities. What better way to grasp an understanding of a already hard concept like addition and subtraction than with fidgets.

I will use the ten frame pop its to visually show students how to add and subtract numbers.

Students will "pop" the first addend in an addition sentence on the ten frame to represent the number. They will look at the remaining ones they did not "pop" to figure out the second addend to equal ten.

For subtraction, students will "pop" the minuend in a subtraction sentence. They will "unpop" the subtrahend of the subtraction sentence to find the answer.

The mini bowling games will also be another way to teach students subtraction. When they bowl, they will write the sentence on the ones they knocked over and could the ones left to find the answer. This will be a really fun way for them to understand subtraction.

Once students are able to do this independently, these will be placed in math stations for them to strengthen these skills.
